Be Part of the Change

Active involvement of key team members across IWK Health and Nova Scotia Health is incredibly important for successful implementation of the new provincial clinical information system (CIS). There are multiple ways you can be involved, including Peer Mentors, Change Champions, and Provider Champions. People in these roles support and guide their colleagues through the process of adapting to new technology, ensuring a smooth and successful Go-Live, and beyond. 

Physician Leads 

  • Dedicated roles available for IWK Health sites, Nova Scotia Health zones, and specialty-specific needs.  
  • Physician Leads​ support OPOR readiness and the physician components of the clinical practice standardization across IWK Health and Nova Scotia Health to improve the quality, safety, and efficiency of patient care using clinical systems and knowledge-driven care.  
  • Physician Leads engage patient care providers with varying roles including physicians, interprofessional team members, ancillary department personnel, and health records professionals to contribute to the effective use of the CIS.
  • Physician Leads Assist to create clinical protocols, standardization, and metrics of clinical documentation to facilitate successful adoption of clinical applications.  
  • Physician Leads are responsible for leading the institutional efforts to continue to build, validate, and optimally implement the physician and advanced practice provider components of a province-wide CIS and any digitally enabled healthcare. 
  • Physician Leads have a focused responsibility across their designated specialty area or zone as appropriate, with special attention on CIS implementation and physician engagement.

Time commitment: Estimated at 4-6 hours per week.  

Compensation: Combined sessional and deliverable based.

Physician Champion 

  • Physician Champions facilitate and lead the knowledge transfer process and local risk mitigation in their divisions, departments and/or sites.  
  • Physician Champions disseminate critical information and materials to their colleagues.  
  • Physician Champions focus on ensuring readiness for the upcoming CIS and support their colleagues in implementing necessary local mitigations.

Provider Champions 

  • Provider Champions are physicians, nurse practitioners, or medical residents endorsed by their medical leadership to support the readiness and adoption of OPOR in their departments.  
  • Provider Champions are informal leaders who help ensure medical staff are prepared to transition to the OPOR-CIS, and they support their colleagues with critical information and guidance.  
  • Provider Champions collaborate with OPOR teams to address any challenges or resistance to the new system.

Peer Mentors

  • Peer Mentors are advanced users who can support their peers while working their regular shift. These are not dedicated technical support roles.  
  • Peer Mentors are “go-to experts” who provide real-time support, basic troubleshooting, and guidance on connecting with additional resources when necessary.

Change Champions

  • Change Champions are volunteers who stay up-to-date with the latest OPOR information and updates, acting as key resources for their teams during the adoption process.  
  • Change Champions are crucial for keeping their teams informed and prepared for upcoming changes.  
  • Change Champions help bridge the gap between the OPOR team and staff by sharing updates, answering questions, and providing guidance during the transition to OPOR-CIS.
